Close to thirty years spent moving between algorithmic trading, cloud security, and cyber defense — brought directly into this course's operational security pipeline.

Dr. Ravi Mallarapu has spent close to three decades working at the intersection of quantitative systems and security — first defending the infrastructure that high-frequency trading depends on, then building the cloud security frameworks that let a hedge fund the size of Bridgewater trust AWS, and now applying reinforcement learning to both digital-asset trading risk and autonomous threat response. The course's operational security pipeline isn't an academic exercise for him; it's the shape of the problems he's spent his career solving.

His path started in infrastructure and cybersecurity leadership at D. E. Shaw & Co., supporting the always-on, latency-sensitive demands of high-frequency trading — an environment where a security gap or an infrastructure failure is measured in milliseconds and dollars, not just an incident report. That discipline, building systems that have to be both fast and provably safe, became the thread running through everything that followed.

At Bridgewater Associates, he served as Chief Architect and Technology Fellow, developing the secure AWS migration frameworks that let the firm move its infrastructure to the cloud without loosening its security posture — work that produced more than 20 publicly released AWS security features, hedge-fund-grade security engineering that became public infrastructure other organizations could build on.

That same instinct, that security has to be demonstrated rather than assumed, shaped his doctoral research: reinforcement learning for autonomous threat response in complex systems. Not just detecting an intrusion, but training an agent to act on it correctly, under uncertainty, at machine speed. The work didn't stay in the lab; it was later commercialized.

Today he leads AI-driven systematic trading and quantitative research at Blockchain.com, applying reinforcement learning to trading strategy and risk in digital-asset markets, and advises NATO's Collective Cyber Defense Center and EigenCloud.xyz on cybersecurity operations and incident response. It's the same underlying question in every chapter of his career — how to act correctly, and defensibly, under partial information — just asked in a different domain each time.
